for the past 5 weeks or so i've been focused on getting a handle on a functional understanding of the fretboard... and i mean focused. each day i've done at least three 25-minute practice sessions on just this one topic. every. single. day.
each day begins with my normal hour to an hour and a half practice, of which at least 25 minutes, and often 50, is spent on this material. when i get home i'll do another 25 and one more later on in the evening right before bed. that's a minimum of 75 minutes a day and some days it's 100. over the course of 39 days that's at least 48+hours. that's a lot of time spent working on a thing.
why am i doing it? because it's important to me. because i know that getting a really good handle on it is one of those big pieces of the puzzle that has been missing from my knowledge of the instrument. it's one of those intangible things about the instrument that a lot of people are blissfully unaware of but has haunted me since i was 15. i just don't get it. or, i didn't get it, is probably a better way to put it.
now, it's a work in progress and will likely take years to really internalize, but i'm well on my way. it's a ton of work and i enjoy they long game but i know every day i pick up the bass i know it better and deeper than i ever have.
